A place to play, connect and thrive together

Thrive Play Café was founded by Abbey, inspired by her passion for early childhood development, her experience in education and her own journey into motherhood. With the support of her mother, Monica, Thrive was created with one simple vision: to build a space where families feel supported, connected, and never alone.

Based in Sunderland, Thrive Play Café has been thoughtfully designed for children aged 0–4, offering a cosy, nurturing environment where little ones can learn, play, explore and truly thrive.

The idea for Thrive comes from both professional expertise and lived experience.

Abbey is a mother of two daughters and has over 10 years' experience in education as a primary school teacher, Assistant Headteacher and SENCo. Throughout her career, she has supported children with a wide range of needs and championed inclusive learning environments. Alongside this professional background, her own experience of becoming a parent highlighted just how challenging and isolating the early years can feel. She wanted to create a welcoming space where families could access high-quality play opportunities, build meaningful connections and feel genuinely supported.

Monica has spent her career supporting children and families, including those with additional needs and terminal/serious conditions. Her compassion, advocacy and deep understanding of the importance of community have helped shape the values that sit at the heart of Thrive.

Together, Abbey's educational expertise and vision, combined with Monica's experience supporting families, have created more than just a play café. Thrive is a space built on understanding — of children's developmental needs, the realities of modern parenting and the importance of community and connection.

As a Community Interest Company, Thrive exists to give back. Our focus is on supporting early childhood development, reducing isolation for parents and carers and creating an inclusive, welcoming community. Any surplus we make is reinvested into improving access, enhancing our offer and supporting the wellbeing of the families we serve.

Thrive is our way of helping build the kind of community we know families need — one where you feel welcome, supported, and never alone.

Our hope is that Thrive becomes a place where friendships are formed, support is shared, and both children and their grown-ups feel part of something truly special.
